Movement word bank: alternatives to walked and ran
Better words for walked, ran, jumped and fell: slow, quiet, purposeful, fast, climbing, falling and smooth movement.
About this word bank
"Walked" and "ran" tell the reader that a character moved, but not how. A character who trudged is tired; one who crept is hiding something; one who strode is confident. A precise movement verb shows character and feeling in a single word.
Words are grouped by the kind of movement, so your child can choose the verb that fits what the character is feeling.

How to use this word bank without overdoing it
- Pick the verb that shows the feeling. Trudged means tired; crept means careful or scared; strode means confident.
- A strong verb doesn't need an adverb. "She crept" says more than "she walked quietly" and "she crept quietly" says it twice.
- Don't change every "walked". In a busy action scene, plain verbs keep the pace quick; save the vivid ones for moments that matter.
- Keep the tense steady. If the story is in the past tense, every verb here ends in -ed (or is an irregular past tense like crept, leapt, fled).
Practice: Walk it, then write it
- Write: "Tom walked across the room."
- Rewrite it four times so Tom is (a) exhausted, (b) sneaking, (c) furious and (d) late. Change only the verb and one detail.
- Ask someone to guess Tom's feeling from each sentence.
