Ratio and Proportion

Sam and Priya share £45 in the ratio 2 : 3. How much money does Priya get?
3m 10s
  • A
    £9
  • B
    £15
  • C
    £18
    Your answer
  • D
    £27
    Correct answer
  • E
    £30
How to work it out
Add the parts first: 2 + 3 = 5 parts. One part is £45 ÷ 5 = £9. Priya has 3 parts, so she gets 3 × £9 = **£27**. Watch out: £18 is Sam's share (2 parts), so always check whose share the question is asking for.

Word Problems

A school buys 8 boxes of pencils with 36 pencils in each box. The pencils are shared equally between 9 classes. Each class then gives 2 of its pencils to the art room. How many pencils does each class keep?

  • C

    Your answer
  • D
    34
  • E
    36
How to work it out
Take it one step at a time. Step 1: 8 × 36 = 288 pencils altogether. Step 2: 288 ÷ 9 = 32 pencils for each class. Step 3: each class gives 2 away, so 32 − 2 = **30**. 32 is the answer after step 2, before the last step. Underline each thing the question asks you to do, and tick them off before you choose.

AI Performance Summary

Maya is up 16 points on this paper in three attempts, and Ratio is now the clearest next step.

76% is 12 points above the average for this paper (64%), which puts Maya in the top 25% of children who have taken it.

Maya was secure on Percentages and Area and Perimeter, getting every question right, including a multi-step L-shaped area question that many children find hard. Fractions are also strong (5 out of 6), and comparing fractions with different denominators is now reliable.

Most of the lost marks came from two habits rather than gaps in knowledge. In ratio questions she found one share but gave the wrong person's answer, and in longer word problems she stopped one step short. Both are fixable with short, focused practice and a quick "have I answered the actual question?" check.

Strong Topics

  • Percentages: 4 out of 4
  • Area and Perimeter: 3 out of 3
  • Fractions: 5 out of 6

Needs Work

  • Ratio and Proportion: 2 out of 4, mixing up whose share is asked for
  • Word Problems: 3 out of 5, missing the final step in multi-step questions

Next Steps

  1. 1.Do a 10-minute Ratio round in Practice & Review this week.
  2. 2.Retry the 6 saved mistakes in two or three days, while they're still fresh.
