How the 11+ works by area

There is no single national 11+. In some areas a council or a group of grammar schools runs one test for every grammar school, such as the Kent Test or the Buckinghamshire Secondary Transfer Test. In others, each school sets its own test and registration, as in Barnet, Bromley and Kingston upon Thames.

In England, registering for the test is a separate step from applying for a school place: families apply through their local council by the national deadline of 31 October, and offers go out on National Offer Day in March. Northern Ireland has its own system: the SEAG transfer test, with applications through the Education Authority.
