Editing and proofreading checklist

About 5 minutes

Name

Date

Use this checklist in the last five minutes of a writing task. Read your work quietly to yourself, tick each check when you've done it, and note three changes you made.

Punctuation and spelling

  • Every sentence starts with a capital letter and ends with . ? or !
  • Names of people and places have capital letters.
  • Speech is inside inverted commas, with a new line for each new speaker.
  • Commas separate items in a list and come after fronted adverbials.
  • Apostrophes are in the right place (it's = it is; the dog's bowl).
  • I've checked the spelling of any word I wasn't sure about.

Sentences and paragraphs

  • I've started a new paragraph for a new time, place, person or event.
  • My sentences start in different ways (not all 'I', 'He' or 'Then').
  • I've used a mix of short and long sentences.
  • I haven't written 'and then' again and again.

Making it better

  • I've swapped at least one boring word for a stronger one.
  • There's at least one simile, metaphor or piece of personification.
  • I've shown a feeling rather than just naming it.
  • My ending solves the problem and isn't rushed.

Tips for parents

  • Make editing a separate step with its own time. Children who 'check as they go' often don't check at all.
  • Look for one pattern of mistake at a time, for example apostrophes this week, paragraphs next week.
  • A neat single line through a mistake, with the correction above, is fine in an exam. There's no need to rub out.

Written the story? Get feedback on it

Once the plan becomes a story, get it marked: your child writes to exam-style prompts, typed or handwritten, and you get feedback on what went well and what to improve. There's a free 7-day trial.

Questions parents ask

Should my child leave time to check their 11+ writing?

Yes: about five minutes. Correcting missing full stops, capital letters and a few spellings is the quickest way to pick up marks, and most marking schemes include technical accuracy.

What mistakes do children most often make in 11+ writing?

Missing or run-on sentence punctuation, no paragraphs, speech without inverted commas, too many sentences starting with 'Then' or 'I', and rushed endings. This checklist covers all of them.
