Find three stronger words for each tired word in the table. Then rewrite the paragraph, upgrading the words in capitals. Choose words that fit the meaning, not just long ones.

Example

Before: The dog WENT across the BIG field.

After: The dog bounded across the vast field. (Or: The dog limped across the vast field. Each verb tells a different story.)

Tips for parents

  • The best word is the most precise, not the longest. 'Tiptoed' beats 'perambulated' in almost every story.
  • Keep a 'magpie book' where your child collects good words from their reading, with a sentence for each.
  • Check meaning: thesaurus words don't always fit. 'Enormous' and 'obese' both mean big, but they're not interchangeable.

Written the story? Get feedback on it

Once the plan becomes a story, get it marked: your child writes to exam-style prompts, typed or handwritten, and you get feedback on what went well and what to improve. There's a free 7-day trial.

Questions parents ask

Why does vocabulary matter in 11+ creative writing?

Precise, ambitious vocabulary is one of the main things 11+ writing marks look for. A few well-chosen words (a verb like 'scuttled' rather than 'went') make writing more vivid and show the examiner a wide vocabulary.

Should my child use a thesaurus in practice?

Yes in practice, never in the exam. The aim is to build up a store of words they know well enough to use without help. Always check a new word's meaning in a sentence before adopting it.
