Story openings: try four kinds

About 15 minutes

Name

Date

Write four openings for the same story, one of each kind. Each opening should be one to three sentences. Then choose the one that hooks the reader best.

My story idea or title

1. Start with dialogue

e.g. 'Don't touch that!' Aunt Rosa shouted, but it was too late.

2. Start with action

e.g. Jake sprinted across the ice as the first crack split the silence.

3. Start with description

e.g. Fog crept up from the river, swallowing the lamp posts one by one.

4. Start with a question or mystery

e.g. Nobody had opened the green door in fifty years. So why was it ajar?

Which opening hooks the reader best?

Tick one, then explain why.

  • Dialogue
  • Action
  • Description
  • Question or mystery

Tips for parents

  • Ban 'One day...' and 'Once upon a time...' for a week. It forces a more interesting first line.
  • Look at the first lines of books on your shelves together and sort them into the four kinds.
  • A good opening drops the reader into the middle of something. Explanation can come later.

Questions parents ask

What is a good way to start an 11+ story?

Start in the middle of something happening: a line of speech, a sudden action, an unusual detail or a mystery. These hook the reader straight away and are far stronger than 'One day' or waking up in the morning.

How long should a story opening be?

The hook itself is usually one or two sentences. The whole opening section, before the build-up begins, is often one short paragraph in a 30 to 45 minute 11+ story.
