Choosing grammar schools: questions parents ask
How do I choose which grammar schools to apply for?
Start with the schools your child could realistically travel to each day, then check each school's admissions policy: some give priority to children living in a catchment area or within a set distance, others offer places in score order wherever children live. Visit on open days if you can, and note which 11+ test each school uses, as you may need to register for more than one.
What does 'as the crow flies' mean?
The distance is measured in a straight line from the middle of your postcode to the school. Schools that use distance in their admissions rules measure it their own way, often from your home's front door and sometimes by the shortest walking route, so their figure can be different.
Why don't you show a pass mark or cut-off for every school?
We only show past results that come from an official source, such as the school's or council's published admissions data, and that we have checked. Many schools don't publish them in a consistent way, so where we haven't got a checked figure we say so rather than guess.
Can I apply to a grammar school outside my council area?
Yes. In England you apply through your own council's secondary school application, even for schools in another area, and you can list grammar schools anywhere. Your child may need to register for that area's 11+ test separately, so check the registration dates early.
Do you keep my postcode?
No. Your postcode is used once to work out distances and isn't stored. It's looked up on postcodes.io (open data from the Office for National Statistics) to find its location.
