Grammar schools near you: questions parents ask
Does living near a grammar school mean my child gets a place?
Not on its own. Children usually have to pass the school's 11+ test first, and then each school's admissions rules decide who is offered a place. Some give priority to children living in a catchment area or within a set distance, others to the highest scores wherever they live. Always read the school's admissions policy.
How are the distances worked out?
In a straight line from the centre of your postcode to the school. Schools that measure distance for admissions often use a different point or the walking route, so their figure can be a little different.
Can I apply to a grammar school in another county?
Yes. In England you apply through your own local council, even for schools in another area, and you can list grammar schools anywhere. Your child may need to register for that area's 11+ test separately, so check the test's registration dates early.
Why does a school say 'Dates not published yet'?
We only show dates we've checked against the test organiser's or school's own website. Until then the school says so; check its website, or come back later.
