11+ pass marks and qualifying scores
Parents often ask what the 11+ pass mark is. The honest answer is that there isn't one: each test and school decides how results become places, and the figures change. Here is how standardised scores work, the difference between a qualifying score and a ranked list, and what we know about each area's test.
Standardised age scores, in plain English
Marks become a score
Most 11+ results aren't given as raw marks. Each paper's marks are turned into a standardised score, where 100 is the average for children of the same age, so papers of different difficulty can be compared.
Age is allowed for
A child born in August can be nearly a year younger than one born in September. Standardisation compares each child with others of the same age in months, so younger children aren't at a disadvantage.
Scores can be combined
Many tests add the subject scores together, sometimes weighting them: the Medway Test, for example, counts English and Maths twice and Reasoning once. That's why some qualifying scores are in the 200s or 300s.
Want a feel for where a practice paper puts your child? Our 11+ score calculator turns a practice mark into an estimated standardised score, as a guide only.
Qualifying score or ranked list?
The School Admission Appeals Code puts it simply: some grammar schools “offer places to those who score highest, others set a pass mark and then apply oversubscription criteria to those applicants that reach the required standard.” Many areas use a mix of the two.
A qualifying score
Every child who reaches the score is eligible, then places go out using the school's admission criteria, such as distance or catchment. Buckinghamshire is the clearest example: a score of 121 qualifies for its grammar schools.
The 11+ in BuckinghamshireA ranked list
Places are offered in score order until the school is full, sometimes within priority areas. There is no fixed pass mark: the South West Herts Consortium schools, for example, rank children for their selective places.
The 11+ in HertfordshireA mix of both
In Essex, each CSSE school has its own cut-off, with a minimum score below which no places are offered. In Kent, children qualify on a total score with a minimum on each paper, and head teacher panels assess some others.
The 11+ in EssexWhy cut-off scores vary by school and by year
Different schools, different rules
Schools sharing one test can still use its results differently: one may rank, another set a threshold, a third reserve places for a nearby area.
Ranked places move every year
Where places go in score order, the last score offered depends on how many children applied, how they did and how many places there were.
Scores are standardised afresh
Each year's scores are worked out from that year's children and papers, so an old year's figure is a rough guide at best.
Qualifying isn't the same as a place
Popular schools can fill up with qualified children who live closer, so check the oversubscription criteria too.

11+ pass marks: questions parents ask
What is the pass mark for the 11+?
There is no single 11+ pass mark. Each test, and sometimes each school, decides how results turn into places: some set a qualifying score that children must reach, some offer places in score order until they are full, and many do both, so check the admissions policy of every school on your list.
What is a standardised age score?
A standardised age score turns a raw mark into a score on a common scale where 100 is the average for children of the same age. It allows for age in months, so a child born in August isn't marked down for being nearly a year younger than a classmate born in September, and it lets papers of different difficulty be compared fairly.
What is the difference between a qualifying score and a pass mark?
A qualifying score is the official minimum a school or area uses to decide whether a child is eligible for a grammar school place; "pass mark" is the everyday name for it. Reaching it makes a child eligible, but places are then given out using the school's oversubscription criteria, such as distance or catchment.
What score do you need for a Buckinghamshire grammar school?
Buckinghamshire Council treats a Secondary Transfer Test score of 121 or more as qualifying for its grammar schools. Children can also qualify through the council's Selection Review, and qualifying still doesn't guarantee a place at a particular school, because places are allocated under each school's oversubscription rules.
Does reaching the qualifying score guarantee a grammar school place?
No. Qualifying makes a child eligible, but if more qualified children apply than there are places, the school uses its oversubscription criteria (often distance, catchment or priority areas) to decide who is offered a place. That is why it matters to list other schools you would be happy with on your application.
Why do 11+ cut-off scores change every year?
For schools that offer places by rank, the lowest score offered depends on how many children apply, how well they do and how many places there are that year, so it moves from year to year. Even fixed qualifying scores can be set or reviewed annually, so always use the figure published for your child's year of entry.
What does it mean when a school ranks 11+ scores?
A school that ranks scores offers its places in score order, highest first, until it is full, sometimes after giving priority to children in a set area. There is no fixed pass mark, so the last score offered is only known after allocation and is different each year.
Where can I find the qualifying score for my child's school?
Look in the school's admissions policy (its determined admission arrangements) or the council's admissions booklet for your child's year of entry; they set out the qualifying score or how places are ranked. Our area guides and test guides link to the official pages we checked.
What if my child just misses the qualifying score?
Some areas have a review stage for children close to the score, such as Buckinghamshire's Selection Review and Kent's head teacher panels, and every family refused a place has the right to appeal. Each area's process and deadlines are different, so read the council's or school's own guidance.
