What is Symmetry?

Symmetry creates perfect balance! 🎯

Symmetry is a transformation that creates balance and harmony in shapes and patterns. A shape is symmetrical when it can be transformed in certain ways and still look the same. Symmetry is found everywhere in nature, art, and design.

Line Symmetry
Mirror symmetry

A shape has line symmetry when one half is a mirror image of the other half. The line of symmetry acts like a mirror.

Rotational Symmetry
Turn symmetry

A shape has rotational symmetry when it looks the same after being rotated around a center point.

Point Symmetry
Center symmetry

A shape has point symmetry when it looks the same when rotated 180° around a center point.

Key Concepts

Symmetry Types

Understand different types of symmetry: line, rotational, and point symmetry. Learn to identify and classify symmetrical patterns.

Order of Symmetry

Learn to count the number of times a shape can be rotated to look the same. Understand symmetry order and its significance.

Pattern Recognition

Develop the ability to recognize symmetrical patterns in nature, art, and everyday objects. Understand the beauty of balance.

Examples

Example 1: Line Symmetry

Mirror Symmetry

Square: 4 lines of symmetry
Rectangle: 2 lines of symmetry
Triangle: 3 (equilateral), 1 (isosceles) or 0 (scalene)
Circle: Infinite lines of symmetry
Letters: A, B, C, D, E, H, I, K, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y
Fold test: If halves match, it's symmetrical

Testing Line Symmetry

• Fold the shape in half
• Check if sides match exactly
• Try different fold lines
• Count the number of lines
• Use mirror to test

Example 2: Rotational Symmetry

Turn Symmetry

Square: Order 4 (90°, 180°, 270°, 360°)
Equilateral triangle: Order 3 (120°, 240°, 360°)
Regular pentagon: Order 5 (72°, 144°, 216°, 288°, 360°)
Circle: Infinite order
Rectangle: Order 2 (180°, 360°)
Order = number of times it looks the same

Testing Rotational Symmetry

• Mark a point on the shape
• Rotate the shape
• Count how many times it looks the same
• Calculate angle: 360° ÷ order
• Check all rotations

Example 3: Point Symmetry

Center Symmetry

Square: Has point symmetry
Rectangle: Has point symmetry
Circle: Has point symmetry
Letters: H, I, O, S, X, Z
Triangle: No point symmetry
180° rotation around the centre point

• Snowflakes
• Flower petals
• Building facades
