What are Angles in Shapes?

Angles in shapes follow mathematical rules! 📐

Every shape has specific rules about its angles. Triangles always have angles that add up to 180°, quadrilaterals always have angles that add up to 360°. Understanding these rules helps us calculate missing angles and solve geometric problems.

Triangles
3 angles = 180°

All triangles have angles that add up to exactly 180°. This is true for any type of triangle.

Quadrilaterals
4 angles = 360°

All quadrilaterals have angles that add up to exactly 360°. This includes squares, rectangles, and more.

Missing Angles
Calculate unknown angles

Use angle sum rules to find missing angles when you know some of the angles in a shape.

Key Concepts

Angle Sum Rules

Triangles: 180° total
Quadrilaterals: 360° total
Use these rules to find missing angles.

Special Properties

Equilateral triangles have equal angles (60° each). Isosceles triangles have two equal angles.

Problem Solving

Use algebra to solve for unknown angles. Set up equations using angle sum rules.

Examples

Example 1: Triangle Angles

Find missing angle in triangle

Given: 45° and 60°
Step 1: Add known angles
45° + 60° = 105°
Step 2: Subtract from 180°
180° - 105° = 75°
Missing angle = 75°

Triangle Rules

• All triangles: 180° total
• Equilateral: 60° each
• Right triangle: 90° + 2 others
• Isosceles: 2 equal angles

Example 2: Quadrilateral Angles

Find missing angle in quadrilateral

Given: 90°, 90°, 120°
Step 1: Add known angles
90° + 90° + 120° = 300°
Step 2: Subtract from 360°
360° - 300° = 60°
Missing angle = 60°

Quadrilateral Rules

• All quadrilaterals: 360° total
• Square: 90° each
• Rectangle: 90° each
• Parallelogram: opposite equal

Example 3: Isosceles Triangle

Find angles in isosceles triangle

Given: One angle is 40°
Step 1: Isosceles has 2 equal angles
Step 2: 40° + 40° + x = 180°
Step 3: 80° + x = 180°
Step 4: x = 100°
Angles: 40°, 40°, 100°

Special Triangle Properties

• Isosceles: 2 equal sides, 2 equal angles
• Equilateral: 3 equal sides, 3 equal angles
• Right: one 90° angle
• Scalene: all different
