What is Reflection?

Reflection creates mirror images! 🪞

Reflection is a transformation that flips a shape over a line called the mirror line. The reflected shape is a mirror image of the original, appearing on the opposite side of the line at the same distance. Reflection preserves size and shape but changes orientation.

Mirror Line
Line of reflection

The line across which the shape is reflected. It acts like a mirror, creating a perfect mirror image on the other side.

Distance
Same distance

Each point in the reflected shape is the same distance from the mirror line as its corresponding point in the original shape.

Orientation
Flipped image

The reflected shape appears flipped or reversed compared to the original, like looking in a mirror.

Key Concepts

Mirror Line Properties

Understand how the mirror line affects the reflection. Learn about vertical, horizontal, and diagonal lines of reflection.

Distance Preservation

Learn that corresponding points are equidistant from the mirror line. Understand how to measure and verify distances.

Visual Recognition

Develop the ability to recognize reflected shapes and understand how orientation changes in reflections.

Examples

Example 1: Vertical Reflection

Vertical Mirror Line

Mirror line is vertical (up and down)
Shape flips left to right
Distance from line stays same
Like looking in a mirror
Letters become backwards
Example: "b" becomes "d"

Steps to Reflect

• Draw the mirror line
• Mark key points on original
• Measure distance to line
• Plot points same distance on other side
• Connect points to complete shape

Example 2: Horizontal Reflection

Horizontal Mirror Line

Mirror line is horizontal (side to side)
Shape flips top to bottom
Like reflection in water
Letters appear upside down
Distance from line preserved
Example: "p" becomes upside down

Common Applications

• Mirror reflections
• Water reflections
• Shadow effects
• Symmetrical designs
• Logo design

Example 3: Diagonal Reflection

Diagonal Mirror Line

Mirror line is at an angle
Shape flips across diagonal
More complex transformation
Used in advanced geometry
Important in symmetry
Creates diagonal symmetry

Reflection Properties

• Preserves size and shape
• Changes orientation
• Maintains distances
• Creates mirror images
• Used in symmetry
