Movement Skill

What is Translation?

Translation slides shapes without changing them! ➡️

Translation is a transformation that moves a shape from one position to another without rotating, reflecting, or changing its size. The shape slides in a straight line, maintaining its original orientation and dimensions.

Direction
Movement path

The direction in which the shape moves - up, down, left, right, or any diagonal direction.

Distance
How far it moves

How far the shape moves from its original position. This can be measured in units or grid squares.

Preservation
Shape stays the same

The shape maintains its size, shape, and orientation. Only the position changes, not the appearance.

Key Concepts

Direction Vectors

Understand how to specify translation direction using vectors. Learn about horizontal, vertical, and diagonal movements.

Distance Measurement

Learn to measure and specify translation distances. Understand how to calculate movement in different directions.

Position Tracking

Develop the ability to track how shapes move and predict their new positions after translation.

Examples

Example 1: Horizontal Translation

Moving Left/Right

Shape moves horizontally
No change in vertical position
Maintains size and shape
Like sliding on a table
Direction: left or right
Example: Moving 3 units right

Steps to Translate

• Mark the direction
• Measure the distance
• Move each point the same amount
• Keep shape orientation
• Connect points to complete shape

Example 2: Vertical Translation

Moving Up/Down

Shape moves vertically
No change in horizontal position
Like lifting or lowering
Direction: up or down
Maintains all properties
Example: Moving 2 units up

Common Applications

• Moving objects on screen
• Sliding doors
• Elevator movement
• Conveyor belts
• Animation effects

Example 3: Diagonal Translation

Moving Diagonally

Shape moves at an angle
Combines horizontal and vertical
Like moving on a slope
More complex movement
Still maintains properties
Example: Moving 3 right, 2 up

Translation Properties

• Preserves size and shape
• Maintains orientation
• Changes only position
• All points move same amount
• Creates parallel shapes
