What are 2D Shapes?

2D shapes are flat shapes with length and width! 📐

Two-dimensional shapes are flat figures that have length and width but no depth. They include triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, and circles. Each shape has unique properties like sides, angles, and symmetry that help us identify and classify them.

Triangles
3 sides, 3 angles

Equilateral, isosceles, scalene. Learn about their angles, sides, and special properties.

Quadrilaterals
4 sides, 4 angles

Squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids. Understand their properties and relationships.

Polygons
Many-sided shapes

Pentagons, hexagons, octagons. Learn about regular and irregular polygons.

Key Concepts

Sides and Angles

Count sides and angles to identify shapes. Understand how the number of sides relates to the number of angles.

Symmetry

Learn about lines of symmetry and how they help classify shapes as regular or irregular.

Classification

Group shapes by their properties. Understand hierarchies and relationships between different types of shapes.

Examples

Example 1: Triangles

Types of Triangles

Equilateral: All sides equal, all angles 60°
Isosceles: Two sides equal, two angles equal
Scalene: All sides different, all angles different
Right-angled: One angle is 90°
Acute: All angles less than 90°
Obtuse: One angle greater than 90°

Triangle Properties

• Always have 3 sides and 3 angles
• Sum of angles = 180°
• Can be classified by sides or angles
• Equilateral triangles are also equiangular

Example 2: Quadrilaterals

Types of Quadrilaterals

Square: All sides equal, all angles 90°
Rectangle: Opposite sides equal, all angles 90°
Parallelogram: Opposite sides parallel and equal
Rhombus: All sides equal, opposite angles equal
Trapezoid: One pair of parallel sides
Kite: Two pairs of adjacent sides equal

Quadrilateral Properties

• Always have 4 sides and 4 angles
• Sum of angles = 360°
• Can have lines of symmetry
• Some have parallel sides

Example 3: Polygons

Regular Polygons

Pentagon: 5 sides, 5 angles
Hexagon: 6 sides, 6 angles
Heptagon: 7 sides, 7 angles
Octagon: 8 sides, 8 angles
Nonagon: 9 sides, 9 angles
Decagon: 10 sides, 10 angles

Polygon Properties

• Sum of angles = (n-2) × 180°
• Regular polygons have equal sides and angles
• Can have multiple lines of symmetry
• Names based on number of sides
